Why a flash drive? A bootable external or internal hard drive works well for desktop Macs but presents a cumbersome problem for notebook Macs. A flash drive is a simple, inexpensive, and portable emergency boot device that can handle OS X or the macOS. Heck, it can even have both operating systems installed, letting you use the emergency USB flash drive to boot any of the Mac's you may have. HI there, the hard drive has failed on my MacBook late 2008 aluminium unibody. A couple of years ago I put in 8 GB of RAM so my thinking was that it is not yet time to replace the MacBook entirely. I have replaced the failed HDD with a compatible 500GB Hard Drive.

Many thanks in advance! I installed Mavericks directly to a brand new external drive using a late 2008 MacBook running Leopard OS with no Snow Leopard. I had the Mavericks installer application already on an archive drive, copied it to the Leopard drive and ran it.
You only need Snow Leopard if you have to download the installer from the Mac App Store. I then put the external drive inside my MacBook and now I have Mavericks with no Snow Leopard intermediate step. In your case since you have no functioning optical drive you really do not have a use for Snow Leopard. Unless your friend has a model Mac that can boot to Snow Leopard your friend cannot even use the DVD to make a boot Snow Leopard drive for you since the DVD installer has to be booted to the DVD.
